25th Nov 2016: Munich- Zugspitz

Another train journey.
It is approximately 90 minutes train journey to reach Garmisch-Partenkirchen (GP) station from Munich central station. When reach Garmisch-Partenkirchen station, we took cogwheel train to Zugspitzplatt (90 minutes). It also can take a ride on the cable car from the Eibsee- Seibahn cable car station. However, it was under maintenance during our visit. Therefore, we took cogwheel train to Zugspitzplatt then took cable car to Zugspitze.

Regio-Ticket Werdenfels
We used regio-ticket Werdenfels to go to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. This type ticket is valid for all DB regio local train (IRE, RE, RB, S-Bahn) and the entire Bahn network in Munich. It also including RVO bus line in the Land of Werdenfels. It was 31 euros for 4 persons.

Zugspitze
It is The highest peak in Germany. It is 2,962 m above sea level and the highest peak of the Wrtterstein Mountains. At here, Germany's highest church, free toboggan ride, an igloo village and mountain view restaurants are the reason to visit Zugspitze. Since 1851, there has been a summit cross on the top of Zugspitze.  The cross has 14 foot hight and located on the West Summit. However, it was taken down after 37 years due to numerous lightning strikes. After repaired, it was placed on the East Summit. It remained for about 111 years until it was removed again on 1993 due to weather and an ill-disciplined American soldier shot the cross in 1945. A new cross summit replaced it and this cross has a height of 4.88 metres and it costed 15,000 euros.

Cogwheel train
The train departure from GP and it has few stops. They are Hausberg, Kreuzeck-Alpspitzbahn, Hammersbach, Grainau, Eibsee, RiffelriB and Zugspitzplatt. After get off from GP train station, followed the sign Zugspitzbahn, the counter is in the yellow building. It is less than 10 minutes walking distance. I will recommend have a short walk from Hausberg to GP station. The scenery is very beautiful.
